Strengthening relationships through understanding

Family mediation services for couples in Jersey

Finance and property

You might be thinking about separating or getting divorced, or you may have already done this. Your situation may be tense and communication between you difficult, especially where money is involved. As such, you might find yourselves struggling to make important financial decisions about the future. This is where FMJ might be useful.

We can help you be clear about your current financial situation, for example the assets such as property and pensions and the debts – whether jointly or individually held. We can work with you to think about how you will deal with these to enable you to both be able to move forward independently. Our mediators are impartial and independent professionals who will help you to find solutions that work for both of you as best they can according to your situation and needs.

Arrangements when parents separate

Supporting co-parenting relationships

Whether separated or divorced, you will still need to co-parent. It’s important for parents to make decisions about their children’s future, as they know them best. However, discussing issues can be difficult, especially when emotions are running high.

Mediation is generally cheaper and quicker than going to court, allowing clients to save money. More importantly, in mediation you keep control over the decision-making and the outcome.

FMJ can help with arrangements like where the children will live and how they will spend time with each of you, as well as for example, special events, holidays, parental decision making, education and maintenance. Our impartial mediators will support you in finding solutions that work for everyone based on your situation.

Mediation is commonly used to create a parenting plan, a detailed document outlining how parents living separately will share responsibilities and care for their children moving forward. Parents collaborate with the support of a mediator to develop a plan that prioritizes the best interests of the children. This helps preserve healthier relationships, which is especially important when children are involved.

Child inclusive Mediation (CIM)

Family Mediation Jersey offer Child Inclusive Mediation (CIM) and it is free!

During mediation about arrangements for children and young people, parents are encouraged to consider the implications of the decisions they propose to make. This isn’t always easy - when parents disagree about how to share their parenting, the voice of the child may not always be heard very clearly, as adults become preoccupied with their own issues.

CIM provides an opportunity for children and young people aged 10 and over to speak with an impartial third party and have their views fed back to their parents to consider in their decision making.

CIM is a specialised approach within the field of family mediation that focuses on involving children in the conversation during divorce or separation. It recognises the importance of considering children's perspectives, needs, and voices when making decisions that directly impact their lives.
